SAFW: GQ Scouting Menswear Competition
It’s been a couple of days since SAFW ended and I am still picking my jaw up from the floor. Some of the collections I got to see where just amazing, while the concept of some of them went right over my head.
I would tell you all about the beautiful gowns, dresses and women’s wear that I experienced but that would just be too predictable… I want to talk about the menswear, because I was incredibly surprised by where some of these designers are taking menswear in South Africa.
The first collection that caught my eye, was by GQ Scouting Menswear winner, Floyd Manotoano (Floyd Avenue). The winning collection, according to Manotoano, was inspired but the youth of the 2015 #FeesMustFall movement where students took to the streets to demand equal opportunities for education in South Africa.
I think that Floyd Avenue’s contemporary streetwear won this competition because the collection was just flawless! Clean, artistic, powerful and on-trend.
My favourite thing about the collection has to be the designer’s use of the timeless denim trend. My ultimate favourite pieces are all the cropped pants in the collection.
Another collection that impressed me was House of Saint Luke’s SS17 Collection. The collection was bright, bold and daring with a little South African shade for good measure. The Durban based fashion house is definitely something to watch out for in menswear.
